Do I have to plant anything in my topiary or can I just leave it “as-is”?
Don’t have a green thumb? Just leave the topiary exactly the way it is and set it outside during the summer months! Once in a while you can green it up with “Moss Green” or spray it with a mixture of water and a few drops of food coloring. You will find that you may need to green it up more often if you keep your topiary in direct sunlight. An area with a little shade is recommended.
What do I do with my “as-is” (unplanted) mossed topiary over the winter months?
The first and maybe easiest is to keep the topiary inside, garage, basement or living room over the winter. No watering or misting, just the form and the moss. This way the moss will not start to deteriorate and keep its nice green color.Rain and snow will start to decompose the moss and by spring it will have sunk a little bit into the topiary form and the green color will have faded. It will still be perfectly fine to plant but it will not look exactly like when it was first purchased. You could also keep your topiary on your covered porch and string some lights on it!
Are the topiaries in the photos featured on your website planted or “as-is”?
The lush green appearance in our website pictures is just the original green moss and not a planting so if that is the look you are going for you would not need to plant your topiary but just keep some moss green (or a bottle of water and green food coloring) on hand and “lush it up” as you feel it needs it.A shady or semi-shady spot is best in this case.
What kinds of plants can I plant in my topiary?
As to plant choices, you can use anything from a thyme to creeping jenny and you will need to trim it occasionally, (just like going to the groomer!) Click HERE for a list of other plants that work well in our mossed topiaries.
Do I need to water the moss if I am not yet ready to plant?
No. Think of the moss as the “soil” in your topiary as it will not “grow” on it’s own. In fact, it is best if you keep the moss dry until you are ready to plant due to the fact that the moss has an amazing water retention quality and it may start to rot if there are no plants to utilize the water.
What do I do with my planted topiary over the winter months?
Here you have a couple of options. If your topiary is small to medium in size, one option is to mulch in your item (using leaves/grass clippings) or wrap it in burlap. Or you can move it indoors to an unheated garage near a window. The key here is to protect the plants from the wind. If your topiary is too large to mulch in or move indoors, you can drive stakes into the ground and wrap it in burlap. Again, this is to prevent the wind from getting at the roots. Alternatively you can simply let your topiary stay as it is and replant in the spring giving your item and fresh new batch of color and texture.
If I buy an empty frame, can I buy moss to install myself?
Filling the forms is a simple and easy task to perform; it just takes a bit of time and a little bit of elbow grease. ONE TIP: make sure your moss is firmly packed to ensure the success of your plants. Too tight and the moss will not allow any air to get to the roots. Too loose and there will not be enough moisture retained to ensure your success.
How much moss will my empty topiary frame require?
Each breed page lists the required amount of moss near the breed "frame only" photo.
Will I be charged tax on my order?
Michigan Residents are charged a 6% tax rate.
